Runrig

Runrig is a Scottish folk rock band founded in 1973 by brothers Rory (bass, vocals, acoustic guitar) and Calum MacDonald ( percussion, vocals) and Blair Douglas ( accordion), a little later reinforced by the singer Donnie Munro ( vocals, acoustic guitar).

Band name

Runrig ( Scottish Gaelic: Ruith raon ) literally means a number (run) of arable strips ( rig ), but thinks the system of land use, as it was practiced in the Highlands before the British destroyed it as part of the Highland Clearances.

History

Initially called the band Run Rig. Some members of the group were new were added. For "classic" cast included Iain Bayne (drums ), Malcolm Jones ( guitars, flutes, Young Midi -pipes, bagpipes, accordion, vocals), Peter Wishart (keyboards).

Initially known by small concerts in Scotland, Runrig began a career with self-written and self-composed songs. The group plays a part, rock music with strong Scottish influence, on the other hand, it is historical Scottish lyrics and songs in Gaelic. The leaders of the group are the brothers Calum and Rory MacDonald, who jointly write most of the songs of the band.

The charismatic lead singer Donnie Munro the group moved into the international spotlight. Some albums created, until he surprisingly stepped out of the lineup in 1997. He was a candidate for the Scottish Parliament, but failed. Musically, he returned to the roots of Scottish folk music and released in 2003 the album Gaelic Heart exclusively with songs in Gaelic.

The group, which was a short time without a singer, was with Bruce Guthro from Nova Scotia ( Canada), the new front man.

2001, the group lost another fellow at the policy, because Peter Wishart joined as a Member of the British House of Commons. It replaced the then 20 -year-old Brian Hurren (keyboards and vocals).

To mark the 30th anniversary of a particular album was recorded, which included older material and for the departing founding member Blair Douglas contributed a song. The album Proterra comes up with a modernized sound that was yielded mainly through the involvement of producers and sound tinkerer Paul Mounsey.

The Group has in Germany a solid, loyal fan base, the so-called " Riggies ".

Runrig engaged socially. So were Iain Bayne (drums) and Calum MacDonald to bring ( percussion) on 15 March 2006 as guests of Glasgow the Caring City in South Africa, drums and other instruments for education programs in the schools.

On 18 May 2007, the 13th studio album titled Everything You See was published. The first single from the album called Year of the Flood was first played in January 2007 by a Danish radio station.

In November 2007 she took part in the BBC Children in Need charity campaign and delivered the Scottish contribution. But they chose the song Loch Lomond. The song was not only 25 years earlier had been their first single, it's also their "trademark" and formed for a long time the completion of their concerts. They played the song along with a stadium full of fans of the Scottish national football team, the Tartan Army. They were supported also by Rod Stewart. The single became their first UK -wide top 10 hit ( in Scotland number 1). From this song more than 40,000 CDs were loud Tartan Army until February 2008 sold (of which 13,000 iTunes downloads).

Special

As NASA experts after the crash of the space shuttle Columbia amassed scattered across several U.S. states rubble, they found a completely intact CD of the Scottish group. The astronaut Laurel Clark, a big fan of the band, had taken the album into space.

Been nine CDs and two DVDs were released from the Access All Areas series with old and new concert recordings, demos and interviews for members of the Scottish Runrig fan.
