Rupert Charles Barneby

Rupert Charles Barneby ( born October 6, 1911 in Monmouthshire, England; † 5 December 2000) was an American botanist and author.

Biography

Barneby was born in Monmouthshire, England. He attended Cambridge University, where he in 1932 with a BA reached in History and Modern Languages ​​. In 1937 he moved to the United States, where he lived until his death. Barneby took the U.S. citizenship. Barneby worked from the 1950s until shortly before his death in the New York Botanical Garden. His longtime significant other was Harry Dwight Dillon Ripley ( 1908-1973 ).

Barneby published books throughout his professional life and described over 1,100 new species of plants. About 25 plants are named after him, as well as the genera Barnebya, Barnebyella, Barnebydendron and Rupertia. His main area of ​​interest in botany was the plant family Leguminosae, and also the plant family Menispermaceae. Barneby received several awards in the field of botany.
