Rupert Julian

Rupert Julian (born 25 January 1879 in Whangaroa, New Zealand, † December 27, 1943 in Hollywood, actually: Thomas Percival Hayes ) was an American film director, actor, screenwriter and producer of New Zealand origin.

Life

The more experienced stage actor left his New Zealand home in 1913 and emigrated to the USA where he immediately received many leading roles in smaller films. In 1914 he played the role of " Antonio " in Lois Weber's film adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, the first feature film in history, which was directed by a woman. Also starting in 1914 turned Rupert Julian himself his first films as a director.

He had his greatest success so far in 1918 as director, producer, writer and performer of the propaganda strip The Kaiser, the Beast of Berlin, in which Rupert Julian the image of the last monarchs of the German in the title role of the German Emperor Wilhelm II in the eyes American public coined permanently. Today, there are no copies of this enormously successful film financially more known; he is on the list of the Ten Most Wanted Movies of the American Film Institute.

1923 took over Rupert Julian during the current filming of the director of the film Merry- Go-Round, after Erich von Stroheim was dismissed by studio chief Irving Thalberg. 1925 Julian turned his now famous movie: The Phantom of the Opera. Then Rupert Julian was not able to his earlier successes. In 1926 he was in the staged his own spy film Three Faces East once again the "Kaiser Wilhelm". In the same year he had with the drama Silence, especially when criticizing success. He finished his career in 1930 with his first two sound films: The Romance Love Comes Along and the horror film The Cat Creeps. Then he retired for health reasons from the film business. He died in 1943 at the effects of a stroke.
