Rurima Island

Rurima Iceland is a small island in the Bay of Plenty in the same region in the north of the North Island of New Zealand.

It is located about 10 km north-west front of the mouth of the Rangitaiki River and 9 km west of the larger island Moutohora Iceland. The island is an uninhabited nature reserve. The nearest town is about 10 km away in Thornton.

Owner of the island is the Iwi of Ngati Awa of Whakatane.

The island is the largest of the 3 small islands and two rocky islands of the existing Rurima Islands. The two smaller islands are Moutoki Iceland a kilometer west and Tokata Iceland one kilometer east.

The island has a length of about 500 m and has on the northeast side two bays with sandy beach and on the north side of a rocky coast with a lagoon.

On the island live tuatara. It is forested with pohutukawa trees. The area around the islands is volcanic activity, from a boat can be seen in the sea ascending volcanic gas bubbles.

The area around the islands will be used for snorkeling and kayaking. It can be reached in 40 minutes by boat from Whatakane from.
