Rusty Bryant

Royal G. "Rusty " Bryant ( born November 25, 1929 in Columbus ( Ohio), † March 25, 1991 ) was an American soul-jazz and rhythm and blues saxophonist (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone).

Life and work

Bryant grew up in Columbus, where he was known in the local jazz scene. He then worked with Tiny Grimes and Stomp Gordon before 1951 founded his own ensemble. In 1955 he completed a recording contract with Dot Records and took in the second half of the 1950s several albums; his number " All Night Long", a faster version of the title Night Train, was a hit in the R & B singles chart in the U.S..

Bryant's contract with Dot ended in 1957; then he returned to his hometown of Columbus to occur mostly locally, often with the pianist / organist Hank Marr. He received attention for his involvement with Groove Holmes ' album That Healin ' Feelin' (1968 ), which led for Prestige Records to a recording session under his own name. From 1969, he worked on a number of albums, including by Boogaloo Joe Jones, Johnny Hammond Smith, Sonny Phillips; In 1970 he published his album Soul Liberation, which was commercially successful, reaching # 35 U.S. Black Albums charts and # 15 Top Jazz Album charts. Bryant continued his recording activity continued until the early 1980s; after that he worked mostly in Columbus. He died there in 1991.
