Saarland state election, 2004

  • SPD: 18
  • Green: 3
  • FDP: 3
  • CDU: 27

The election for the 13th Parliament of Saarland took place on 5 September 2004. The CDU was the clear winner of the election and continued to pose a CDU - party government.

Initial situation

Top candidates

Again for the CDU joined the Acting Prime Minister Peter Müller as a top candidate. The SPD sent her Presidents Heiko Maas in the race.

Dials

Peter Müller stepped in to confirm its absolute majority in 1999. The SPD and Heiko Maas wanted to reclaim the majority and form a government led by the SPD. The goal of the Greens and the FDP sat back down in the state legislature to feed.

Result

The ruling party CDU again succeeded in recording vocal profits to himself and was represented from now on with 27 seats ( 1) in the Diet. The big loser of the election was the SPD. She suffered a dramatic slump votes and lost seven deputies. She received only 18 seats. This is the worst result of the Social Democrats since the election of 1960 ( first state election as a German state ). The Greens and the FDP managed to climb over the five- percent hurdle. They were from now on, each with three representatives in the Saarbrücken parliament. Over the legislature stepped out of a Green Member of Parliament from the party. This sat in Parliament since non-attached. The NPD failed in 4% relatively scarce at the entry into the state parliament. The family party achieved its best result ever at a state election.

Turnout: 55.5 %

Government formation

The absolute majority of the CDU has been confirmed and even extended. As a result, Peter Müller was able to form a government again without a coalition partner.
