Sabri al-Asali

Sabri al - Asali (Arabic صبري العسلي; * 1903 in Damascus, Syria Vilayet, † April 13, 1976 ) was a Syrian politician and three times Prime Minister of the independent Syrian republic. It was in 1958 also the Vice President of the United Arab Republic.

Life

The Sunni Asali was born into a wealthy landowning family in the then Ottoman Damascus. Shukri al - Asali His uncle was a famous national leader and a deputy in the Ottoman Parliament, who was executed by the Vali Cemal Pasha on May 6, 1916 in Beirut. Sabri al - Asali attended the University of Damascus, graduating in law in 1925.

During the French Mandate over Syria Asali occurred in 1936 in the pro-independence National Block and was elected to the Syrian Parliament; in the years 1943, 1947 and 1962, he was re-elected. In the cabinet Saadallah al - Asali Dschabiri from October 1945 held the office of Justice and Minister of Education.

After the independence of the Syrian Republic of France in 1946 Asali has been appointed Minister of the Interior of Jamil Mardam Bey in 1948. After the military coup of Husni az- Za'im 1949 Asali was imprisoned. On March 1, 1954, he was however the first time appointed Prime Minister, a position he held only until June 19, however. Due to its proximity to the powerful military, he received a second term on 13 February 1955. This lasted until September 13 of the same year.

When Syria created due to the Suez Crisis of 1956 preparations for a union with Egypt under Nasser, also Asali became a Nasserist. He was therefore appointed for the third and last time as Prime Minister of the Syrian Republic on 14 June 1956. With the end of his term on February 1, 1958, the United Arab Republic was formed out of Egypt and Syria, and Asali became the Deputy President Nasser. After his forced resignation in 1959, Asali concluded in 1960 the Syrian opposition against the Nasser regime and supported the military coup of 1961, which ended the Union, and signed the secession declaration.

Following the Ba'athist coup of 1963 Asali was accused of collaboration with the Sezessionistenregime. His property was confiscated, and his civil rights have been taken from him. He retired from now on, from public life and died on 13 April 1976 in Damascus.
