Formation

The making of the album was accompanied by major problems. While the musicians were not progressing with the writing of new songs, singer Randy Blythe suffered from writer 's block. On top of that Blythe drank too much alcohol. The musicians set themselves the goal to simplify the songs without losing the progressive approaches. The texts are in contrast to the two previous albums, As the Palaces Burn and Ashes of the Wake stained less political.

In an interview, explained singer Randy Blythe, that he has dedicated his inner demons while writing the lyrics. Thematically it comes to women, the music business and alcohol addiction. Overall, the band wrote 15 songs, eleven of which were used for the album. It was produced and mixed Sacrament of " Machine". The album was mastered by Brian Gardner and Vlado Miller. For the songs "Redneck " and "Walk with Me in Hell" music videos were filmed.
