Sacrow–Paretz Canal

The Sacrow - Paretzer channel ( SPK) in the state of Brandenburg is a section of the Federal Waterways Lower Havel - Waterway ( official symbol: UHW ). Responsible for managing the Water and Shipping Authority Brandenburg.

Location

The canal starts at km 20.11 of UHW and connects the Havel on the outskirts of Berlin - Potsdam ( Jungfernsee ) with the Havel east of Ketzin. At km 32,59 the channel ends on Göttinsee at Paretz where it reaches again the Havel. Just before that opens from the north east of the Havel a channel in the Sacrow - Paretzer channel. The Sacrow - Paretzer canal crosses the white sea, the Fahrlander lake on the southern edge and the Schlänitzsee; the Schlänitzsee part of the river basin of the Wublitz. At 28.48 km south of the village Uetz crosses the motorway A10 - Western Berliner Ring the channel. A total of four bridges cross the Sacrow - Paretzer channel. The entire waterway is 12.5 km in length, with about 7.5 km along channel routes, the remaining 5.0 kilometers accounted for by existing lakes routes.

Hydrology

Since the channel has no locks, flowing from Jungfernsee to Göttinsee at least half, but often a much larger part of the Havel water. Through the channel and correspondingly less by the Potsdamer Havel arch with age and new ride

Explanation for the local differences of the water flow in the channel: Part of the water takes the path here through the lower Wublitz. On the other hand, there are lateral flows.

The jumps in the flow values from the sections Spandau - Jungfernsee and Götinsee - Ketzin - Brandenburg provide a basis for the parallel flow through the Potsdamer Havel. The deficit of the flows between Ketzin, Brandenburg and Plaue towards Spandau - Potsdam explained by the particularly large in the dry removal of hot water and at high temperatures by the significant evaporation of the big Havel lakes at low water.

History

The early 1870s resulted in a considerable approaches to improve the navigation conditions on the waterways between Berlin and the Elbe. A first implementation was the construction of Sacrow - Paretzer channel. The work was begun in 1874. Early as 1876 could directly between Sacrow and Paretz shipping. Already 1888-1890 was a sole widening to 18 m and a recess. In the 1920s it was widened. Since then he has an average stream width of 50 meters and is approximately 3.40 meters deep.

Main reasons for building

The main reasons were to:

  • Circumvention of difficult bridge crossings in Potsdam and Werder ( Havel );
  • The shortening of the path on the waterway of 13.5 km;
  • Avoiding the trip across the Havel, who then became dangerous, especially at higher wind speeds from the west of shipping.

Development

The Sacrow - Paretzer channel is one of the waterways that should be expanded for larger barges ( German Unity Transport Project No. 17 ). The expansion should be carried out from 2008 and take four to five years. The channel should be widened by the northern shore is dredged. At the same time a recess for more than four meters should be made. Except for the restriction on Nedlitzer puncture to large ships should be able to meet on the entire channel length.

Since the channel is located on the undeveloped state of a traffic control has been introduced. This includes a definition of meeting and overtaking and passing places for certain traffic groups.

In the region, there have been protests against the expansion, since, especially in conjunction with the regional effects of global climate change, with far-reaching consequences for flora, fauna and water balance is to be expected. Because of incalculable ecological consequences the city of Potsdam also has the channel expansion rejected in an opinion ( in part due to a projected decrease in the water level of the lake maiden by two to nine centimeters). In the early 1990s commissioned studies on an increase in cargo ship traffic have not been confirmed until now. Currently, the environmental checks are run as part of the planning approval process. This involves, for example, to the reaction of beaver lodges and protection of fence lizards. In the region of already implemented Biberburg However, new beaver have been reintroduced.

In the fall of 2008 the city of Potsdam, and environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against the channel widening before the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig. In this regard, a settlement was reached in January 2010, in which the channel though but not absorbed is widened.

Bridges

Note

With the construction of Nedlitzer puncture -called sub-section of the Sacrow - Paretzer channel from 1902 to 1904 a first bridge over the road on the new puncture between the White Sea and the Jungfernsee arose. The puncture was 1932/33, and widened in the course of the expansion, the bridge was replaced. Destroyed end of the war in 1945 originated from debris partly also other bridges in 1950 a new steel truss bridge called the Bridge of Peace. Over the years, the bridge has become increasingly dilapidated, also a result of intensive use by heavy military vehicles over the Soviet army was quartered near to the reversal time. 2010 therefore began construction of a new south bridge Nedlitzer that since the end of 2011 fulfilled its task. There was a bronze plaque with the inscription 1950 and Bridge of Peace in the post-war bridge. This panel was missing for about a year and was set up on 23 January 2013, the presence of the Lord Mayor of Potsdam on the south bank again.

Traffic control

In the sliver of Sacrow - Paretzer channel, the control section 14 has been set. It begins with the 20 kilometers of the Lower Havel Waterway ( UHW ) and ends at km 27 In this waterway section is a traffic control for relevant traffic groups instead.
