Monastery Saddell (En: . Saddell Abbey; Gäl Abaid Shaghadail ) is a former Cistercian monastery in Scotland. The name is of Norwegian origin ( "sandy dale ").
Location
The monastery is situated in Argyll on the east side of the Kintyre Peninsula.
History
The monastery was founded in 1207 by Ragnall ( Reginald ), founded the son of Somerled ( King of the Hebrides ) and staffed by monks from the Irish monastery of Mellifont, which in turn was a daughter house of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. The monastery was probably already in the reign of James IV (1473 - 1513) received; the bishops of Argyll used but still occasionally the title of Kommendatarabts of Saddell.
Buildings and plant
The monastery is now a cemetery. Preserved are historic grave stones.
