Sailing to Philadelphia (german for: " After sailing Philadelphia " ) is the second studio album by Mark Knopfler. It was released in 2000. As the pieces Singles What It Is, Sailing to Philadelphia and Silvertown Blues were released.

Background

As in most of Knopfler's albums, it also goes on Sailing to Philadelphia, both topics of everyday life, as well as to historical themes. The title song, for example, tells the story of astronomer Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon of geodesics, 1763 and 1767 called the Mason - Dixon line measure it in the years that forms the traditional boundary between the northern and southern United States. According to an interview to Thomas Pynchon's novel Mason & Dixon Knopfler has inspired the piece. Also the song Baloney Again has a historical background: it is of black itinerant priests who want to spread their Christian faith in 1953 in rural America and the racism they encounter it.

Tour

The Sailing to Philadelphia tour lasted from 27 March to 31 July 2001 and consisted of 80 concerts in Europe, Russia, North and South America. The band consisted of Mark Knopfler (guitar, vocals ), Richard Bennett (guitar ), Guy Fletcher (piano, backing vocal ), Glenn Worf ( bass), Chad Cromwell (drums ) and Mike Henderson ( guitar, mandolin, violin, harmonica ).
