Saint-Jean-d'Aulps

Saint -Jean- d'Aulps, until 1961 officially named Saint -Jean- d'Aulph, is a village in Haute - Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Saint -Jean- d'Aulps is located at 815 m above sea level. Level, 20 km southeast of the town of Thonon -les- Bains ( straight line ). The village is located in the central Chablais, in a valley widening of the Vallée d' Aulps both sides of the Dranse de Morzine, at the western foot of the Roc de Tavaneuse in the northern Savoy Alps.

History

The village, whose Latin name Sanctus locust Alpibus was, was founded in 1095 by the Benedictine and later Cistercian Abbey of Notre -Dame- d'Aulps. In the 12th century the abbey became an important pilgrimage destination and passed through numerous donations to a large estate in the Haut- Chablais. Towards the end of the 15th century began a gradual decline, and in 1793 left the last monks the abbey. When the Church of Moussière 1823 one was destroyed by fire, rock material was used from the Abbey Church, which increasingly fell apart in the sequence to the ruins for reconstruction.

Until 1961 the church was called Saint -Jean- d'Aulph, since it takes its name officially.

Attractions

The present village church was built in the first half of the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. From the old abbey church and cloister, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, the ruins are preserved. The remains of the 1902 classified as a Monument Historique building have been restored. Also worth seeing chapels are located in Bas Thex, on the Alp at Graydon ( Chapelle de l' Immaculée - Conception, built in 1859 ) and in Essert la Pierre ( Notre Dame de Compassion, founded in 1534 and rebuilt in 1832 ). Population

With 1210 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint -Jean- d'Aulps one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. After the population had decreased markedly during the 20th century (1921 counted Saint -Jean- d'Aulps in 1999 inhabitants), a population increase was recorded since the mid-1970s again. Economy and infrastructure

The village lies on the main road that leads from Thonon -les- Bains through the Vallée d' Aulps to Morzine.
