Geology

The municipality of Saint- Pardoux- la -Rivière is bisected by two intersecting fault systems (N 065 and N 160). North and east of this fault system are at basement rocks of the north-western Massif Central, in the southern gusset sediments of the northern Aquitaine basin. The metamorphic basement rocks has been singled out on the basis of these boundary noise compared to the sedimentary cover.

Oldest basement unit are mica-schists of mica slate Parautochthonen unit; they are in the eastern part of the township at ( at Chantres and Le Châtenet ). In they came during the Upper Carboniferous of Saint -Mathieu- leucogranite ( here in its Saint- Saud- facies ) a. The leucogranite is digested in the upper Dronnetal. North of the 065 N - trending main fault, are plagioclase - leading paragneiss. They are sporadically interspersed with smaller Granodioritkörpern of Piégut -Pluviers - granodiorite and of Ordovician Leptyniten.

The flat-lying sediments at the center consist of Lias and Dogger calcareous. The near disorders partially silicified Lias is from Hettangian ( sandstones, coarse sandstones and conglomerates), Sinemurian ( Oolithkalke, partly dolomitic ) constructed and Toarcian ( mudstones and gray marl ). These clays were previously utilized by a now disused brickyard. The Dogger is composed of cryptocrystalline limestones, limestones and bioklastischen Oolithkalken of Oberbajocs and Bathoniums. Along the main fault, so-called Sidérolithique ( ferruginous, red, clayey sands) and solidified, konglomeratisches alluvium has been preserved. Both formations are likely to date from the Eocene. All these sedimentary formations are in places covered by colluvial gravels of the Pleistocene. In Dronnetal gravel terraces can be seen from the Mindel and Würm glaciation. Occasional Kalkhangschutt is also from the last ice age.

Worth mentioning are occurrences of slightly silver -containing galena in the paragneisses and barite predominantly in the Lias. Also tourmaline may occasionally occur in the paragneiss. Manganese ( manganese dioxide ) was also reduced ( at Le Mandereau ) with nontronite was discovered. The pre- exaggerated in the paragneiss Neuil Mine contains galena and barite also chalcopyrite, gypsum, marcasite, pyrite, pyromorphite and sphalerite.
