Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Quebec

Sainte -Anne -des- Plaines is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is located in the administrative region of Laurentides, around 40 km north-west of Montreal. Sainte -Anne -des- Plaines is part of the regional county municipality ( municipalité régional du comté ) Thérèse - De Blainville, has an area of ​​92.81 km ² and has 14,535 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

Sainte -Anne -des- Plaines is located in the Rive -Nord in relatively shallow, partially wooded terrain at the foot of the Laurentian mountains. Several streams drain the plain east to Rivière Mascouche, a tributary of the Rivière des Mille Îles. Neighboring municipalities are Sainte -Sophie in the north, Terrebonne in the east, the south and Blainville Mirabel in the West.

History

1673 created by the French king Louis XIV Seigneurie Terrebonne. The first colonists settled at 1731 down to the present-day city. 1787 saw the establishment of the parish of Sainte -Anne -de- Mascouche, which renamed itself in 1816 in Sainte -Anne -des- Plaines. Its name refers to Saint Anne and the situation in one plane. The community was founded in 1845 and in 1987 received the city status. The Canadian Pacific Railway opened in 1877 a branch line which was decommissioned in 1963. Since time immemorial, the place is dominated by agriculture, is important, especially the cultivation of strawberries. The city is a member of the administration union Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal since 2000.

According to the 2011 census counted Sainte- Anne -des- Plaines 14,535 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 156.6 inh. / Km ². 96.1 % of the population reported French as the main language, the proportion of English was 1.3 %. Saint -Anne -des- Plaines is located just off the main thoroughfares. Various roads provide connections to the surrounding villages. The company CIT Laurentides operates two bus routes to Laval and Sainte -Thérèse. The highways Autoroute 640 and Autoroute 15 are around ten per kilometer.

Just outside the town is a prison complex in the state penitentiary organization Correction Canada, one of the largest facilities of its kind in Canada. The complex includes a prison each of the low and medium security level as well as the Special Handling Unit, a maximum security prison.
