Sainte-Catherine, Quebec

Sainte -Catherine is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is located in the Montérégie administrative region, about 15 km south of the center of Montreal. Sainte -Catherine is part of the regional county municipality ( municipalité régional du comté ) Roussillon, has an area of ​​10.19 km ² and has 16 762 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

Sainte -Catherine is located in the region Rive- Sud on the southern shore of the St. Lawrence River ( near the Lachine rapids ) and belongs to the community association Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal. In the municipality there is a section of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Neighboring municipalities are Delson in the east, Saint-Constant in the south and Kahnawake ( a sanctuary of Mohawk ) in the west.

History

1676 the Jesuits built a mission to convert the natives. More than two and a half centuries, the area remained relatively sparsely populated. This changed in 1934 with the opening of the Pont Honoré - Mercier, which connects the neighboring Kahnawake with the Île de Montréal. In 1937 the founding of the town of Sainte -Catherine -de- Laprairie - d'Alexandrie, by assignment of areas of the municipality of Saint- Constant. The city status was given the community in 1973, while the name was shortened to Sainte -Catherine. This is derived by Kateri Tekakwitha, a canonized Iroquois. Traffic
