Sainte-Marie, Réunion

Sainte -Marie is a municipality in the north of the French overseas department of La Reunion and had the census on 1 January 2011 a total of 29,962 inhabitants.

History

According to legend, discovered in 1667 here a ship in the fleet of the French East India Company, which was under the leadership of Mondevergue, a suspicious ship and gave chase. This fell into distress, prompting the team Saint Mary worship and to You promised in the event of their salvation to erect a statue in her honor. After their rescue, the team kept her promise and built a place of worship (now ' Notre Dame de la Salette ') from the wreckage of their ship. Later the village was named after her. 1705 was one of the area five families, eight in 1709, and in 1733 already 25 families lived in the municipality. 1748, the area was appointed to the parish and founded in 1790 the town of Sainte -Marie. 1945, this community was an independent canton.

The historic motto of the church is: Mari, Caelo, terra floreat, Sancta Maria ( German: " over the sea, sky and earth may flourish Santa Maria " )
