Sakala (newspaper)

Sakala is a founded in 1878 Estonian daily. It appears as a regional newspaper in mittelestnischen Viljandi County with a circulation of 11,500 pieces. The newspaper is named after the historical region of Sakala to Viljandi.

History

The first edition of Sakala appeared in Viljandi on 11 March 1878. Initially, she was a weekly, published on Saturdays. It was founded by the Estonian writer Carl Robert Jakobson, one of the most prominent figures in the period of national awakening of Estonians. Sakala was the first political newspaper in the country. She became a mouthpiece of the Estonian national consciousness. So they quickly came under criticism in the tsarist authorities, but even more in the Baltic German upper classes of Estonia. 1879 had Sakala therefore adjust the show for five months.

Carl Robert Jakobson was also editor and managing editor of the newspaper. After his death in 1882 Jakob Kõrv continued the newspaper. Staff have included Friedrich Reinhold Kreutz Forest, Jacob Pärn, Lilli Suburg and Ado Reinvald. The brother Carl Robert Jakobson, Eduard Magnus, was responsible for numerous illustrations as well as for the striking letters of Sakala responsibility of the graces the front page today.

Sakala today

Sakala was still continued until the turn of the century, but lost to Jakobson's death rapidly in influence. Today Sakala is a regional newspaper for the Viljandi County. It is published in Viljandi. Sakala belongs to Postimees Group, which produces, among other things, the regional newspapers Tartu Postimees, Pärnu Postimees, Virumaa Teataja, Järva Teataja and Valgamaalane.
