Eduard Magnus Jakobson

Eduard Magnus Jakobson ( born February 5, 1847 in Torma, † July 2, 1903 in Tallinn) was an Estonian artist, Xylograph and a Baptist missionary.

Life

Eduard Magnus Jakobson was born in Torma in Central Estonia. His father, the Estonian national - minded music teacher Adam Jakobson (1817-1857), died when Eduard Magnus was ten years old. Eduard Magnus Jakobson in 1862 moved with his five year older brother Carl Robert Jakobson after Jamburg. In 1874 Eduard Magnus Jakobson Xylograph studied with August Daugell in Saint Petersburg.

1866 published his first works in the newspaper Eesti Postimees, a year later the first book illustration. He was one of the first book illustrators in Estonia and Latvia, particularly for folk and textbooks. He also established the logo of the newspaper Sakala, who had his brother in 1878 launched. Eng Eduard Magnus remained the national -enlightenment work of his brother's connected. Eduard Magnus Jakobson 1884 moved to Riga and called there in 1888 a Xylographieanstalt to life.

According to estimates by the Estonian artist Eduard Magnus Jakobson Aleksander Tassa has left about 2,500 woodcuts. Other researchers assume that twice the number.

Eduard Magnus Jakobson was also one of the masterminds of the Baptist Churches in Estonia. He was originally a Lutheran. From 1867 he turned, however, under the influence of his art teacher August Daugell the Baptists, whose teachings he propagated in numerous articles and poems. 1869 Eduard Magnus Jakobson settled in the Baptist church in St. Petersburg baptized as an adult. From 1881 to 1884 he worked for the British and Foreign Bible Society. From 1895 until his death he worked in Tallinn and Pärnu as a Baptist preacher.
