The Mediterranean brown trout or Corsica trout ( Salmo cettii ) is a species of fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae ) that is found in Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Italy in the area of ​​the Magra. Many authors see the Mediterranean brown trout as a subspecies of trout ( Salmo trutta as macrostigma ). Whether as a Mediterranean brown trout respected species or subspecies is mono- or polyphyletic today, is still unclear.

Features

Mediterranean brown trout usually remain relatively small and reach a body length of no more than 40 centimeters. The body has 20 to 60 black and brownish- red, small, eyes similar points as well as in the adult state nine to 13 dark bars on the flanks. The caudal fin is slightly emarginate.

Lifestyle and risk

The animals inhabit streams in the hills and karst source areas in the lowlands. You like to keep to in densely vegetated areas. As a food are mainly aquatic insects. The spawning season is from January to March, the eggs are deposited on gravel bottom in shallow water.

The Mediterranean brown trout is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources ( IUCN) as Near Threatened ( Near Threatened, NT ). The species is threatened by water extraction, overfishing and introduction of non-resident trout species. According to IUCN is believed that the stock has decreased by almost 30 % during the last three generations (10 to 12 years).
