Salomon van Ruysdael

Salomon van Ruysdael (* 1600 in Naarden or Haarlem; buried November 3, 1670 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch painter. He was the uncle of the Dutch landscape and marine painter Jacob van Ruisdael.

Ruysdael was a member in 1623 and 1648 Executive Board of the Haarlem painters' guild. Presumably, he was educated at Esaias van de Velde, under whose influence he painted ice landscapes in his youth. Later he painted after Jan van Goyen Dutch Flat and shorelines, river and canal views. Between 1659 and 1662 he also produced some still life. Initially his coloristic treatment was a bit woolly, especially in the foliage of the trees, but they soon evolved into full clarity, warmth and luminosity to be entrapped last into a heavy, brownish tone.

Salomon van Ruysdael was the brother of Isaak van Ruisdael, the father of Jacob van Ruysdael Salomonszoon and the uncle of Jacob van Ruisdael Izaaksoon, all worked as a painter.
