Salvatore Giunta

Salvatore " Sal" Giunta (born 21 January 1985 in Clinton, Iowa) is an American soldier. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since 1976.

Life

Giunta is the son of Steven and Rosemary Giunta. He attended Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In November 2003 he joined the U.S. Army. He is married.

Giunta received his basic education and training for the infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia. It was first used in March 2005 to March 2006 in Afghanistan. His second deployment lasted from May 2007 to July 2008. Giunta was promoted in August 2009 to the Staff Sergeant and was stationed in the fall of 2010 in the Caserma Ederle, the base of the 173rd Airborne Brigade near Vicenza in Italy.

To GIUNTAS previous military awards include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, two Army Commendation Medals, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge ( parachutist badge).

Salvatore Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in October 2007 at a mission in Afghanistan. His unit was part of Operation rock avalanche on the road when she was attacked in the eastern Afghan Korengal Valley of Taliban. Despite enemy fire succeeded Giunta to free a seriously wounded comrade from the hands of the attacker and kill one of the opponents, he was himself shot.

Received the Medal was awarded by President Barack Obama at the White House on November 16, 2010. Giunta left the army in June 2011 to study at Colorado State University.
