Sam Morgan (musician)

Sam Morgan ( born December 18, 1897 in Bertrand, Louisiana, † February 25, 1936 in New Orleans) was an American New Orleans jazz cornet player and bandleader.

Life

Sam Morgan led in the 1920s, one of the classic bands of New Orleans jazz, among other things with Jim Robinson; his recordings from 1927 (two sessions with a total of 8 tracks of 14 April and 22 October are the only known recordings) are the authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton 's view as rare evidence of this music recorded in New Orleans. The Sam Morgan 's Jazz band recorded for Columbia Records title as Steppin 'on the Ga or Mobile Stomp; contributing musicians were his brothers Isaiah Morgan on trumpet and Andrew Morgan on tenor sax ( and clarinet); Earl Fouche played alto saxophone, trombone player was Jim Robinson, who later played with Bunk Johnson, George Lewis and performed at Preservation Hall. Bass player was Jim Robinson's cousin Sidney Brown (aka Little Jim or Jim Little); later he worked with George Lewis, as with the Climax sessions in the 1940s. In his bands occasionally also played Henry " Red" Allen and Fate Marable. An illness ended in 1932 San Morgans career prematurely; he died in 1936.
