Sam St. Laurent

Sam Saint -Laurent ( born February 16, 1959 in Arvida, Quebec ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender and coach, who played in his playing days from 1975 to 1992 among others for the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League.

Career

Sam St. Laurent began his career as a hockey player with the Sagueneens de Chicoutimi, for which he was active in the Canadian Junior Football League QMJHL 1975-1979. From 1979 to 1986 played goalkeeper for the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League, while he came especially for the Toledo Goal Diggers in the International Hockey League in his first four years in the professional field in parallel. In the season 1983/84 he won with the Maine Mariners of the Calder Cup. In the 1985/86 season he was also in four games for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League action. In the AHL, the Canadian was one of the best Torwärten the league and was elected in 1985 and 1986 respectively in the second All- Star team. In 1986, he was named along with his compatriot Karl Friesen won the Harry " Hap " Holmes Memorial Award for the goalkeepers team with the lowest Gegentorschnitt the AHL. He also received the Aldege " Baz " Bastien Award as the best goalkeeper in the league.

On August 18, 1986 St. Laurent of the New Jersey Devils in the NHL was delivered to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Steve Richmond. In the following four years, he played a total of 31 times for Detroit in the NHL. Most of the time he spent, however, in their AHL farm team Adirondack Red Wings. With Adirondack he won in the 1988/89 season also the Calder Cup. He himself played a key role in this success, and was awarded the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as most valuable player of the AHL playoffs. Most recently, he ran from 1990 to 1992 for the Binghamton Rangers in the AHL, whereby he mainly took part in his second year with Team Canada at the Olympic preparation. Following the Winter Games in 1992, he ended his active career at the age of 33 years.

From 1993 to 2004 St. Laurent worked as a goalkeeper coach for the New York Rangers of the NHL.

Internationally

For Canada, St. Laurent took part in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, where he won the silver medal with his team. As a goalkeeper, he remained in the tournament without use.
