Samuel Annesley

Samuel Annesley (* 1620 in Kellingworth near Warwick, Heart of England, † 1696 ) was a prominent Anglican Puritan pastor. Best known he was for his Morning excercises, a collection of sermons.

Life

Annesley was born the son of John Aneley. He was related to Arthur Annesley, first Earl of Anglesey. In 1635 he was accepted to study at Queens College, University of Oxford, where he received his BA and M. A. acquired.

On July 26, 1648 he preached before the House of Commons and in the same year he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford awarded. 1657 he was appointed Lecturer in St. Paul's.

He died on 31 December 1669th His funeral sermon was preached by Daniel Williams and Daniel Defoe wrote a lament on the occasion of his death. He was at the church cemetery of St. Leonhard 's buried in Shoreditch, London.

Works

His works consisted of several sermons, which were published separately. He also brought a collection of sermons out under the title Morning Excersises and wrote several biographies, of which the most famous dealt with the life of Thomas Brand.

Family

Samuel Annesley had a large family (25 children). A daughter, Elizabeth, married John Dunton. Another, Susanna was the wife of Samuel Wesley and the mother of John and Charles Wesley.
