Samuel Lawrence (congressman)

Samuel Lawrence ( * May 23, 1773 in Newtown, New York, † October 20, 1837 at Cayutaville, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1823 and 1825 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman William T. Lawrence was his brother.

Career

Samuel Lawrence was born about two years before the outbreak of the War of Independence in Queens County. He attended community schools. Then he studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in 1794, he began practicing in New York City. He was Clerk of the Attorney General of New York. It then appointed him judge of the Marine Court of New York City (later City Court ). He sat in 1808 in the New York State Assembly. On February 19, 1811, he was County Clerk in New York County - a position which he held until February 21, 1812. Lawrence moved in 1814 to the Cayuta Lake in the Township of Cayuga Chemung County in the (then Schuyler County). He sat in 1817, 1818, 1820 and 1821, again in the New York State Assembly.

As a result of fragmentation of the Democratic-Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the Adams - Clay Group. In the congressional elections of 1822 for the 18th Congress Lawrence was in the 25th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he was the first representative of the 25th District of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives began its service on March 4, 1823. He retired after the March 3, 1825 out of the Congress.

Lawrence died on October 20, 1837 at Cayuta Lake at Cayutaville and was buried there in the family cemetery.
