History

It is believed that this area was named after the 10th Cavalry, which consisted exclusively of African Americans and with Teddy Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill during the Spanish- American War ( 25 April to 12 August 1898) was fighting, but this is not properly proved.

San Juan Hill was the late 19th century and early 20th century, perhaps the most densely populated African American neighborhood of Manhattan. Here lived mostly members of the working class and poor people in tenements.

The demise of San Juan Hill began after the Second World War. It was now as a slum, so that first few blocks were demolished to make way for the Amsterdam Houses - hochgeschossige a social housing estate of red bricks.

Soon thereafter, a large part of San Juan Hill was demolished in the 1950s to make way in the context of urban regeneration in the Lincoln Center. The foundation stone for this was 1959. This was also the end of the San Juan Hill district.
