San Antonio Abad

Sant Antoni de Portmany (Spanish San Antonio Abad ) is the largest city on the west coast of the Spanish island of Ibiza.

The large bay Bahia de Sant Antoni was called already used by the Romans as a natural harbor and Portus Magnus. The bay is now home to the largest port of the island.

For over 2000 years Sant Antoni was no more than a small fishing village. Only started in the 1950s with the increasing tourism, the construction of the famous hotel castles that still characterize Sant Antoni cityscape.

In the 1980s, Sant Antoni got the stigma of a holiday destination of British football hooligans, among which tourism was hard hit. Mid-1990s, the island was discovered by the clubbers scene. Known locations are the Café del Mar and the Eden, one of the many great nightclubs in Ibiza.

Name

The Spanish and formerly also the official name for the city is San Antonio Abad. This is the Spanish name of the Christian Egyptian monk Antony the Great. As part of the implementation of the law on language normalization of the Balearic Islands in 1986 was renamed the Catalan name Sant Antoni de Portmany. The word Portmany goes back to the Latin word Portus Magnus ( great harbor).

In the municipality of Sant Antoni 23,314 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013).

The population growth is quite high since the beginning of mass tourism in the 1960s. While this was initially caused by the influx of workers from the Spanish mainland, the population has been increasing since the 1990s, mainly due to the intense immigration of foreigners. As a result, the proportion of locals has declined in recent decades more and more. Today, less than half of the residents ( 44.0 %), with a native of the Balearic Islands and only 19.1% of Sant Antoni.

A resident of Sant Antoni is called (Spanish: sanantoniés ) in Catalan santantonienc, a resident santantonienca ( sanantoniesa ).

The proportion of foreigners is 24.0 % (2008, only main residence) in the island about average, however, is very high for Spanish standards. In 1991 lived at 4.2 % much less foreigners in Sant Antoni. The number of foreigners has increased ninefold since then. The proportion of foreign-born people is 26.1 %.

Other demographic data

  • The inhabitants of Sant Antoni, in contrast to the Spanish average predominantly male (share: 52.5 %, Spain 49.5 %, 2008). The main reason for the high percentage of men is in the Latin American and especially the Moroccan guest workers.
  • The population is slightly younger than the Spanish average ( 39.5 years, 2001) with a mean age of 37.1 years.
  • There are 5,122 households, that is, live 2.9 persons on average in one household.
  • There are 8,990 apartments, of which 25 % second homes and 12% vacant. The average year of construction of dwellings is 1969.
  • There are 3,988 buildings, of which 70% are single-family houses, 10 % semi-detached houses, 10 % houses with 3-9 apartments, 3 % with 10 or more dwellings and 7% of non-residential buildings.

Languages

Officially, there are Catalan and Spanish equal official languages. From the public side, however, as in most other municipalities in the Balearic Islands, the Catalan language as llengua propia ( native language ) is preferred because there is no obligation, etc. to create bilingual signs, documents. According to estimates, about half of the population speaks Catalan and Spanish as their third language, which basically dominate Catalan- Spanish equally well as their native language.

Economy

The unemployment rate is 27.8 % (2001; foreigners: 33.7 %). 39% of the population is economically active.

Egg of Columbus

The Egg of Columbus (Catalan Ou de Colom ) is the best known and most prominent landmark of Sant Antoni. It stands near the waterfront on a traffic island.

The egg was erected in honor of Christopher Columbus in the early 1990s. According to local legend Columbus is said to have been born in Ibiza (the same is claimed in Ibiza also has the Phoenician generals Hannibal ). The hole in the center of the egg, a replica of the Santa Maria, Columbus' flagship is on his way to the West Indies. The shape of the statue dates back to the story of the egg of Columbus.

Festivals

January 6: Día de los Reyes Magos = Epiphany. Relocation of the kings who invest with a ship and ride horses through the village and distribute sweets to the children.

July 16: Dia del Carmen = Stella Maris, patron saint of sailors, fishermen and the Spanish Armada. With procession from the church to the sea and subsequent tour of the patron saint and the most important dignitaries of the town by the bay of Sant Antoni de Portmany.

August 24: San Bartomeu = patronal festival with big firework

1st Saturday in September: Batalla de tomates entre Cartagineses y Romanos = tomato battle between ' Romans ' and ' Carthaginians ' on the beach of Es Pouet.
