Santiago Province, Chile

The Santiago Province is a province in the Región Metropolitana, Chile. In it are 32 of the 37 municipalities of Greater Santiago (Gran Santiago). The province has 4,927,624 inhabitants ( census 2012) and an area of ​​2030.3 square kilometers. The population density is therefore at 2,427 people per square kilometer. Capital is Santiago.

The Santiago province is located in a valley, surrounded by the peaks of the Andes, by the river Mapocho. It is in the north of the Aconcagua Valley, bounded on the south side of Rancagua Basin and the two Cordilleras. It borders five other provinces of the region as well as in the municipality of Lo Barnechea also to the Región de Valparaíso.

With the provincial capital Santiago is the undisputed political center of Chile, although the Chilean Parliament, the National Congress ( Congreso Nacional), meets in Valparaíso.

The province is a major transportation hub as well as the most important economic and cultural center of Chile with numerous universities, colleges, museums and monuments. The most important companies in Chile have their headquarters here, as well as many foreign branches. The province is also the media center of the country.
