Sashadhar Mukherjee

Sashadhar Mukerji ( S. Mukherjee, Bengali: শশধর মুখার্জী Śaśadhar Mukhārjī; born September 29, 1909 in Jhansi, † November 3, 1990 in Mumbai ) was an Indian film producer of Hindi film.

Life

Sashadhar Mukerji began his film work at Bombay Talkies, where he also brought his brother Ashok, Anoop, Arun and Kishore Kumar, with their only sister Satirani Devi he was married. 1939 produced Mukerji at Bombay Talkies Kangan, the last Indian film directed by Franz Osten. After the death of its founder Studio Himansu Rai, he took together with his widow Devika Rani to lead the company. The joint management of the company cried after a short time dispute the reasons for which in 1941 two production units were formed: one to the director Gyan Mukherjee with Sashadhar Mukerji as producers and to the director Amiya Chakravarty under Devika Rani line. Gyan Mukherjee's debut film Jhoola (1941 ) was by Kangan (1939) and Bandhan (1940, directed by NR Acharya ) Sashadhars third production in a row with Leela Chitnis and Ashok Kumar as stars.

By 1943, the differences with Devika Rani were unbridgeable. After the production of Kismet, a particularly successful in India movie, Mukerjis production group from Bombay Talkies split off and he and Rai Bahadur Chunilal, Ashok Kumar and Gyan Mukherjee, the film company Filmistan (German "Land of the films" ) on the grounds of former film company Sharda. 1944 came out Mukerjis first Filmistan Chal Chal Re Naujawan film. Sashadhar Mukerji forced the focus of the movie rental advertising on the stars of the film and especially on the music and made the production company so that the most influential studio of the post -independence era in India overall. At times, Filmistan was a film factory, as Mukerji was churning mid -budget movies for ever the same pattern.

1958 left Sashadhar Mukerji Filmistan and founded his own film studio in Bombay Filmalaya district Andheri. He handed over his work from 1960 to his son, Joy Mukherjee. His last production was Leader ( 1964).

He stood at the beginning of a whole dynasty of filmmakers. His younger brother Subodh Mukherjee was a director, another brother Probodh Mukherjee producer. Of his six children ( Rono, Joy, Deb, Shomu, Shibani and Subhir ) some who worked in the film industry. His son was Shomu married actress Tanuja and producer, with whom he has two daughters, the actresses Kajol and Tanisha. Sashadhars grandniece ( granddaughter of his older stepbrother Ravidramohan ) is the actress Rani Mukerji.

He was awarded the Padma Shri. At the Berlinale 1967 he was a jury member.
