SATENA (acronym for Servicios de Aeronavigacion a Territos National ) is a public Colombian regional airline based in Bogotá and bases at the airports Bogotá and Medellin.

History

Satena in 1962 by law launched with the aim to promote the far-flung and less developed regions and towns and to bind to the economic centers of Colombia. With the implementation of the Colombian Air Force was commissioned, the existing transport capacity of the Air Force could be better utilized and partially funded.

First was with military machines of the Douglas C -47 and C-54 compounds from Bogota to Leticia, added on Tarapaca to El Encanto to Puerto Legufzamo. This was followed by routes to Cali, Neiva and Villavicencio. The military machines used were not retrofitted for civil transport, the seating consisted of longitudinally arranged canvas benches.

1965 the fleet consisted of two De Havilland DHC- 2 Beaver, five Douglas DC-3, two DC-4 and two Consolidated PBY -5A Catalina. Some machines were the United States gifts. 1968 Satena was a public limited company, a public company in 1971. The route network was expanded to 63 destinations.

Due to the poor equipment of aerodromes, infrastructure, occurred repeatedly in serious accidents. The pilots navigated with cross bearing and near the slopes after sight.

In 1995, the Company received a new management. The punctuality, service and flight safety have been greatly improved. The fleet has now been completely redone, civilian pilots have been recruited and the machines were given civilian registrations. At the turn of the millennium, the route network comprised 112 destinations.

Satena has a monopoly on the old airfield near the city of Medellin, which is limited to 50 - seater. Consequently, the connection to Bogota is very profitable. Other tracks such as, for example, from Medellin to Cali so deficient same routes again.
