Sauro-class destroyer
The Sauro - class destroyer was a class of the Italian Navy.
Construction and engineering
The class consisted of four destroyers, which were built in the late 1920s at the shipyards of Cantieri del Quarnaro in Fiume and Cantieri Odero, Sestri Ponente. The ships were an enlarged version of the Sella class with six instead of four torpedo tubes ( triplets instead of twin sets ), 0.6 meters width enlarged and improved bridge.
Inserts
From 1935, these ships were used for colonial service in the Red Sea. They formed together from the Eritrean port of Massawa from operating 3rd Destroyer Squadron.
Whereabouts
The destroyer Francesco Nullo was sunk on 22 October 1940 by British aircraft, the other three ships sank in an attack on the British base of Port Sudan on 1 April 1941.
Units
The ships were named after figures from the Italian unification movement: Cesare Battisti, Daniele Manin, Francesco Nullo and Nazario Sauro.
