The Sauro - class is a submarine class of the Italian Marina Militare.

Units

The class consists of eight, by Fincantieri in Monfalcone 1974-1994 boats built in four series:

The two boats of the second series were not only named after the scientists Leonardo da Vinci and Guglielmo Marconi, but especially after the two boats of the same name Marconi class from the Second World War. The other boats are named after the U- boat commander Nazario Sauro, Carlo di Fecia Cossato, Salvatore Pelosi, Giuliano Prini, Primo Longobardo and Gianfranco Gazzana - Priaroggia.

Of the four that are still in service ships of this class, which have been extensively modernized between 1999 and 2002, are the two older, Salvatore Pelosi and Giuliano Prini, be taken out of service as soon as 2015 respectively 2016, the second contract section of the submarine class 212 A tapering. About the successor of the two submarines of the fourth series has not yet been decided. Any active boats are stationed at Taranto and belong to the local command submarine forces ( COMFORSUB ).

Until the late 1990s, the boats of the Sauro class were complemented by four smaller boats Toti class.
