Scapa distillery

Scapa is a whiskey distillery in St. Ola at Scapa Flow on the island of Mainland Orkney, Scotland, UK.

History

The distillery was built in 1885 by John T. Townsend and MacFarlane on the site of a former mill and started its operations in October of the same year on. In 1919 she was acquired by the Scapa Distillery Company Limited. Between 1934 and 1936, was not produced, after which they went to Bloch Brothers Limited, which they sold in 1954 to Hiram Walker & Sons, which made installing the distillery fundamentally renovated and new stills. Since 1959 Lomond wash still used. Initially, it was the small, 1956 -built, prototype, came into use in Glenburgie for the production of Glencraig until Inverleven for the production of Lomond and then a short time. In 1971, she was replaced by a double-sized version. Today Scapa is the only single malt whiskey distillery that still uses a Lomond still, however, the adjustable discs were removed. Thus, it is no longer possible to control the return very fine, but it saves the very elaborate cleaning the lens. In 1994, the distillery was decommissioned; from 1997 to November 2004, but it was taken from time to time by the workers of Highland Park in operation, were allowed to share the warehouses in compensation. Since late 2004, the distillery is again operated fully.

Production

The water belonging to the Highlands / Islands distillery dates back to the Lingo Burn and is - in contrast to the malt used - very torfhaltig. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) ( 3.76 t) and six fermentation tanks (wash backs) ( together 352,000 l). Is distilled in a converted Lomond wash still ( 13,500 liters ) and a spirit still ( 12,563 l). For storage only old bourbon barrels are used.

Whiskey

In the trade for a long time was almost the only 14 -year-old Scapa to find. The taste is slightly sweet with an intense bourbon flavor, the finish is dry, with typical island whiskey flavors, but only a very subtle Torfnote. In the summer of 2009 was a 16-year -mounted whiskey on the market, which will replace the 14 -year-old Scapa permanently.
