Scarborough (ship)

The Scarborough was a British transport ship of 418 tons. It was built in 1782 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire and was as a convict transporter part of the First Fleet which transported 1788 European settlers and convicts to Australia. Also at the 1790 following Second Fleet, she participated.

Her captain was John Marshall, the ship's doctor was Dennis Considen. She ran on May 13, 1787 with 208 male convicts on board of Portsmouth and met on 26 January 1788 in Port Jackson in Australia.

Along with the Lady Penrhyn she left on January 26, 1788 Port Jackson, first with target China. On May 17, 1788 she landed on Lord Howe Iceland to take birds and vegetables on board. She arrived on 15 June to 1789 in England.

She went along with the Neptune and the Surprize with the infamous Second Fleet on 19 January 1790 253 male convicts on board to Australia. Captain on the second ride was again John Marshall, ship's doctor was Augustus Jacob Beyer. On April 13, 1790 arrived at the Cape of Good Hope and spent 16 days. They took food and convicts 8 of the sunken Guardian.

On the way she and Neptune were separated into heavy weather of the Surprize and arrived after a voyage of 190 days in Port Jackson on 28 June 1790. On the trip 73 (28%) of the convicts died, another 96 (37%) were sick when landing.
