The spiked centaury ( Centaurium spicatum ) is a plant from the family of Gentian Family ( Gentianaceae ).

Description

The spiked centaury is an annual or biennial plant, which reaches stature heights of 10 to 55 cm. The plant is bare and upright branches from the bottom or the middle, with a deciduous basal rosette of leaves breiteiförmigen. The numerous stem leaves are opposite sessile, elliptic -oblong and have 3-5 nerves. The upper stem leaves are lanceolate.

Unlike other species of the genus centaurium the flowers are sessile and are distinguished, einseitswendigen something ear-like leafed through inflorescences. The flowers are 12-14 mm long. The pink crown consists of five outstretched and about 4.5 mm long lobes. The chalice with adjacent teeth is as long as the corolla tube. Bloom time is from June to September.

Occurrence

The spiked centaury is common in the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean penetrates east to central Asia before. As location salt marshes, wet dune valleys and cultivated land are preferred.
