The snow mountain is a mountain massif in the Rax -Schneeberg Group in Lower Austria, which in 2076 m above sea level. A. high Klosterwappen culminates. It is the highest mountain of Lower Austria and the easternmost and northernmost two peaks in the Alps. His dominance of nearly 50 kilometers is exceeded in Austria only from Grossglockner. Location and construction
The striking mountain massif with several peaks Wettersteinkalk 1800-2076 m has steep mountain slopes on three sides, forming the westerly Rax (2007 m) - separated by the deep Hell Valley - a geological unit. The high snow mountain has a double summit: A gentle ridge connects the further south west Klosterwappen with the Emperor 's Stone ( 2061 m) just above the fisherman's hut. Touristic development
Together with the 13 km south-west to Rax (2007 m above sea level. A. ) the Schneeberg one of Vienna's local mountains and on a clear day from Vienna (65 km distance) is clearly visible. The mountain is from 1897 with the Snow Mountain Railway, a rack railway, opened up to an altitude of 1796 m. His two peaks are accessible from the mountain station of the Ochsenboden in one to two hours. In 1927, the construction of a cable car on the snow mountain was considered. Not far from the mountain station of the snow mountain railway is the Elisabeth Church.
In addition to the cog railway route both water and sewer lines were laid to the mountain station of the railway in 2003. In 2009, the huts ( Damböckhaus, fisherman's hut ) were connected. - The walk from Puchberg am Schneeberg performs substantially along the route of the cog railway on the south side of the elongated stallion to the mountain station and on to the summit. - The climbs through the northeast flank of the mountain ( Nandlgrat, Novembergrat Hermione Steig, Schneider rift) higher demands on the sure-footedness and places connected with easy climbing. The Bürklesteig and Gamsgartlgrat can only be overcome with climbing gear.

The wolf in Rax -Schneeberg - source protection area
