Schoonebeek

Schoonebeek is a town with 3790 inhabitants ( 2004) in the municipality of Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Schoonebeek also Oud- Schoonebeek is called, because of also belonging to Emmen Nieuw - Schoonebeek is in close proximity.

Geography

Schoonebeek is located east of Coevorden directly on the German border on Schoonebeker Diep, which forms the border between the Netherlands and Germany here. Neighboring community on German territory is Emlichheim.

History

Schoonebeek was first mentioned in 1341 and is next to Ruinerwold as one of the oldest places in Drenthe. Until the local government reform in 1998 Schoonebeek was part of the community Schoonebeek that had arisen in 1884 by a division between Schoonebeek and the former rural community Dalen.

Economy

From 1943 to 1996, oil was recovered in the community. 1976 there was an oil spill that caused extensive damage. 2006 was examined whether a resumption of oil production is sensible and 2008 drilling was resumed. Since 2011, oil is produced and transported via a 45 km long pipeline to Lingen in Germany again. There is further processed in the petroleum refinery Emsland of BP.

Attractions and Events

  • The village originally consisted of three parts, Westerse Bos, Middendorp and Oosterse Bos. Here are several old farmhouses that have been placed under protection
  • In the center is still a disused oil pump to visit
  • In Zwaantje Hans- Stokman 's farm annually is a contest in zandtapijt - scattering instead ( tapijt = carpet), are scattered in the different colored sands pattern on the floor.
  • In Schoonebeek there are still some old sheepfolds.
