Sebastián Durón

Sebastián Durón ( born April 19, 1660 in Brihuega, Guadalajara province; † August 3, 1716 in Cambo -les- Bains, Basses- Pyrenees ) was a Spanish organist and composer.

Life

Sebastián Durón probably received his first music lessons from his step-brother Diego Durón (1653-1731), and later by the organist of Zaragoza, Andres de Sola ( 1634-1696 ). 1680 was Durón assistant organist of the Cathedral of Seville, in 1685 he obtained the post of the first organist. Just a year later moved to the better endowed position at the Cathedral of Palencia. In September 1691 he became a member of the Capilla Real in Madrid. Here are his operas and Durón developed also assumed responsibility for the session with music and other theatrical performances. After the death of King Charles II went out the line of the Habsburgs. Karl's successor reorganized the royal chapel and Durón was forced to retire. Because of his advocacy of the Habsburg Archduke Charles rival king he had in the wake of the Dowager Queen Maria Anna of Pfalz- Neuburg in 1706 into exile in Bayonne.

Work

Durón created numerous sacred works in Latin and Spanish languages, including several masses, motets, Miserere, Invitatorien and villancicos, some with instrumental accompaniment, as well as various organ compositions. To his secular music include Tonos humanos and several stage works ( zarzuela ). Duron's operas are on the threshold of traditional Spanish opera and the acquisition of the Italian style, " it de amor la envidia Veveno " of 1711 most clearly emerges in his zarzuela.
