Origin and Meaning

The name Sebastinus goes back to the name of the Greek city of Sebaste, the modern Sivas, in Asia Minor. The town's name was derived from the Greek Σεβαστός sebastos " venerable " from, in reference to Augustus, Latin for " sublime " in honor of a Roman emperor.

The meaning of the name, therefore, is " man from Sebaste " or " the Exalted ", " the Venerable ".

Dissemination

In the first half of the 20th century, Sebastian was a rather ungebräuchlicher name in Germany. Since the early 60s, more and more boys were named Sebastian. In the 80s, the name was then consistently ranked among the ten most frequently awarded first name, even the most common in 1984 at all. Since then, its popularity has waned.
