Sebastião da Silveira Cintra

Sebastião Leme Cardinal da Silveira Cintra ( born January 20, 1882 in Santo Spirito do Pinhal, Brazil, † October 17, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro) was Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro.

Life

Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra studied in São Paulo and Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on 28 October 1904, the sacrament of Holy Orders and subsequently held various activities as a church pastor, seminary teacher and journalist in the Archdiocese of São Paulo true. From 1909 to 1911 he was Pro- Vicar General of the Archdiocese.

1911 appointed him titular bishop of Pope Pius X. Orthosias in Phoenicia and ordered him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. Pope Benedict XV. appointed him in 1916 to the Bishop of Olinda and awarded him in 1918 on the merger of Olinda and Recife dioceses the title of archbishop. In 1921 he appointed him Titular Archbishop of Pharsalus and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, whose line Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra in 1930 took over. Pope Pius XI. took him on 30 June 1930 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio to the College of Cardinals. After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave in 1939, in which Pius XII. was chosen.

He died on 17 October 1942, only 60 years of his bishopric.

Work

As Bishop of Olinda in 1916, he wrote a much-acclaimed pastoral letter in which he denounced the secular politics and the lack of representation of Catholic interests in the political life of the majority Catholic country. This letter led to the conversion of well-known intellectuals Jackson de Figueiredo and the emergence of political Catholicism. To this end, he helped set up in 1922 by de Figueiredo of the Centro Dom Vital, which developed into a training ground for the formation of young Catholic personalities. His work as Archbishop falls into an ideologically, politically and economically very moving and period of crisis ( presidency of Getúlio Vargas, Great Depression ). He called a lay movement to life, to give the political interests of the Catholic population a voice and promoted the creation in 1932 of the League Electoral Católica - LEC (Catholic Electoral League ) as a Catholic representation for the Constituent Assembly ( the beginning of the meetings on 15 November 1933). Cardinal Leme da Silveira was the LEC exact instructions during their work. You could bring major concerns of the Catholic electorate in the new constitution, which came into force on 15 July 1934. In his Archdiocese Catholic Action was set up on July 4, 1937. The impetus for this was a letter from Pope Pius XI. to Cardinal Leme and to the Brazilian bishops on 27 October 1935.
