Papal conclave, 1939

The conclave was held in 1939 in the period from 1 to 2 March 1939., It had become necessary after Pope Pius XI. died on 10 February of the same year. It ended with the election of Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, Secretary of State and Camerlengo ( at its 63rd birthday ) as the new head of the Roman Catholic Church, the name Pius XII. accepted.

Expiration

After the death of Pius XI. cried Gennaro Granito Pignatelli di Cardinal Dean Belmonte the Cardinals together for the conclave. With a duration of only three ballots it was the shortest conclave of the 20th century. Of the 62 Cardinal electors everyone was present. How clearly was the election of Cardinal Pacelli to the papacy, can be gauged by the fact that his election lasted only one day.

Pacelli was the first cardinal secretary of state since 1667 Clement IX. , Who was elected Pope, the Camerlengo first since Leo XIII. in 1878, was the first member of the Curia since Gregory XVI. in 1831 and the first native Romans since Clement X in 1670.

Participating Cardinals

Among the 62 cardinals were also three German cardinals and one from Austria (then part of the National Socialist German Reich ). The number of non-European cardinals had increased to seven.

Most cardinals were of the late Pius XI. created. Only ten cardinals had already participated in the conclave of 1922.
