Papal conclave, July 1276

The conclave lasted 2 July 1276 to 11 July 1276 ie 9 days, and had become necessary by the death of Pope Innocent V.. It was already the second conclave of the year 1276 and elected Pope Adrian V.

Course

After Pope Innocent V had died on June 22, 1276, the conclave met in the Lateran at Rome on 2 July 1276. It was under the influence of Charles of Anjou, who resided in Rome and wanted a French pope. At his instance, the Italian cardinals during the conclave received only bread and water, while the royal kitchen supplied the French cardinals lush. Nevertheless, the Cardinals Otto Bono Fieschi di Lavagna dei Conti chose as pope, who immediately went to Viterbo and was never crowned.
