Participating Cardinals

In the conclave 80 of the 82 countries eligible to participate cardinals were present. It was thus the hitherto most participants conclave in history. Most Cardinals still came from Italy, France and Spain ( 43 in total). Situational context

With the death of the previous Pope, the Vatican was by him convening Second Council in full swing. Thus, the passing away of John XXIII came. unexpectedly for many. Expiration
