Second Republic of South Korea

The Second Republic, after its prime minister also called Chang Myon government was, for eight months, the South Korean government. After Rhee Syng -man had retired (First Korean Republic) after long protests in April 1960 into political exile to Hawaii, democratic development should be promoted. The power of the president was significantly curtailed in favor of a parliamentary system. But the government was overthrown by a military coup by General Park Chung- hee already on 16 May 1961. This then led the country for 17 years virtually as a military dictatorship.
