Sem Dresden

Sem Dresden ( born April 20, 1881 in Amsterdam, † July 31, 1957 in The Hague) was a Dutch composer and conductor.

Life

The Jewish origins, Dresden studied with Bernard Zweers at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Hans Pfitzner in Germany. From 1924 to 1937 he was director of the Amsterdam Conservatory, then director of the Conservatory in The Hague. After the German occupation of the Netherlands he was forced by the Dutch collaborators, leave the office which he again held from 1945 to 1949.

His work includes, inter alia, Chorus tragicus for chorus and orchestra, Variations for Orchestra, a violin concerto, a Sinfonietta for Clarinet and Orchestra, and numerous chamber works.

Sem Dresden is the father of the eponymous writer Sem Dresden ( 1914-2002 ).
