Seneca Lake AVA

Seneca Lake AVA ( recognized since 1988, revised on July 3, 2003) is an American Viticultural Area in the U.S. state of New York. The area is located within Upstate New York in the administrative regions Ontario County, Schuyler County, Seneca County and Yates County in the immediate vicinity of Seneca Lake.

The Seneca Lake is located in a tongue basin of a former glacier, 61 km long and up to 180m deep. The second largest lake in the Finger Lakes, due to its depth has the largest volume of water stored in these lakes. The water masses affect the microclimate advantageous especially in autumn and ensures a longer growing season of the vines.

The Riesling is the marketing of technically successful grape variety in the region.
