Sephardim and Oriental Communities

Sfaradim VeEdot Misrach (Hebrew ספרדים ועדות מזרח, Sfaradim VeEdot Mizrah; German and Sephardic Communities of the East; . Engl Sephardim and Edot Mizrah or Sephardim and Oriental Communities ) was a political party in Israel. It existed from 1948 until 1951.

The party represented the populations of the Sephardim and Mizrahi, who lived in Palestine before the Declaration of Independence in 1948. The Sfaradim VeEdot Misrach in 1949 elected to the Constituent Assembly, from which then the first Knesset was. She was involved in the first government of Israel, in which they formed a coalition with the following parties:

  • HaChasit haDatit haMe'uchedet (Hebrew החזית הדתית המאוחדת; German United Religious Front)
  • Mapai (Hebrew מפא"י; German party of the working of the Land of Israel )
  • Miflaga Progresivit (Hebrew מפלגה פרוגרסיבית; German Progressive Party)
  • Reschima Demokratit shel Natzrat (Hebrew רשימה דמוקרטית של נצרת; German Democratic List of Nazareth )

Overall, the party, under slightly varying names, during the first legislative session as well as at the beginning of the second legislative period from 1949 to 1951 participated in the first and second government. Shortly after the elections to the second Knesset they united with the Hitachdut HaTeimanim beJisra'el (English Yemeni unification in Israel) to the party Tzionim Klaliym ( General Zionists ).

On September 10, 1951 the Sfaradim VeEdot disbanded. The newly formed Tzionim Klaliym united later in other center parties Miflaga Liberalit Jisra'elit and merged in Gachal - election coalition with the conservative Herut, which eventually became the Likud.
