Serafim Fernandes de Araújo

Cardinal Serafim Fernandes de Araújo ( born August 13, 1924 in Minas Novas, Brazil) is a retired Archbishop of Belo Horizonte.

Life

Serafim Fernandes de Araújo studied in Belo Horizonte and Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. In Rome he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Brazilian Pius College. He received his doctorate in both theology and in canon law, and received on 12 March 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders. Subsequently, he taught canon law at the seminary of Diamantina and worked as a parish pastor in Gouveia. In addition, he worked in the diocesan organization for catechesis and in teacher training.

1959 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. Titular Bishop of Verinopolis and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte. Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop per hac vice in 1982 by Verinopolis and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, in 1986 Archbishop same diocese.

In solemn Consistory of 1998 Serafim Fernandes de Araújo was taken as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Luigi Maria de Montfort in the College of Cardinals.

The management of the archdiocese he resigned for reasons of age on 28 January 2004. Cardinal Serafim Fernandes de Araújo was a member of the Pontifical Council " Justice and Peace ".
