Serbian presidential election, 2012

The presidential elections in Serbia in 2012 took place at the Serbian parliamentary elections May 6, 2012 in parallel.

After the incumbent President of Serbia, Boris Tadic, had officially declared his resignation on April 5, 2012, early elections for the Serbian presidency were necessary. These were placed on the same date as the parliamentary elections. The choice was between 12 candidates.

Incumbent Tadic (DS ) totaled 25.33% of about 13,000 votes over his challenger Tomislav Nikolić ( SNS), who scored 24.99% of the vote. Third strongest candidate was Interior Minister Ivica Dacic ( PLC) with 14.24 %. The turnout was 57.9 %.

Since no candidate won an absolute majority, to Tadic and Nikolic had to face on May 20, a runoff election. According to initial projections Nikolić leads with 49.5 % of the votes against 47.35 % for Tadić. Tadić conceded his defeat.

First ballot

The position of candidates on the electoral list was determined by the Electoral Commission by drawing lots ( election result as a percentage).

Accusations of electoral fraud

The opposition leader in Serbia, Tomislav Nikolić, has demanded the cancellation of the election because of large-scale electoral fraud. It should have been 500,000 non-existing persons and deaths registered in the electoral rolls and their voices have gone to Tadić. Previously, the same time organized local elections had already been declared in the second largest city of Nis in 17 polling stations on the ground that the ballot boxes contained more ballots as votes cast. In Belgrade as the local election was canceled on Thursday because of irregularities in 16 polling stations.
