Batista (2011)

Sergio Daniel " Checho " Batista ( born November 9, 1962 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach. As a player, he became world champion in 1986.

Career

As a player

Batista plays in youth with Argentinos Juniors, where he debuted with the first team in 1981. With Argentinos he won from 1984 to 1985, the Metropolitano Nacional of Argentina's Primera División, and the 1985 Copa Libertadores.

In 1988, Batista moved to River Plate, where he won the championship title of the 1989/90 season with the team. Furthermore, Batista played for Nuevo Chicago and All Boys in Argentina and Tosu Futures in Japan.

As a member of the Argentine national football team Batista won the World Cup in 1986 and was runner-up at the World Cup 1990.

As a coach

Batista began his coaching career at Uruguayan club CA Bella Vista in 2000. He had two contracts with Argentinos Juniors, one with Talleres de Córdoba and another with Nueva Chicago. Between 2005 and 2006 he was assistant to Oscar Ruggeri at CA San Lorenzo de Almagro.

In October 2007, the former midfielder was appointed as head coach of the Argentine U-20 national team and sparked Hugo Tocalli from. He also oversaw the Argentine Olympic team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

After the Treaty of Diego Maradona was not renewed after the FIFA World Cup 2010, Batista was appointed on 27 July 2010 on the interim coach. In this role, he led Argentina to two victories (1-0 against Ireland and 4-1 over world champions Spain ) and suffered a defeat against Japan 0-1. Three months later, he was officially appointed head coach of the Argentine national team. In his first game in this capacity his team defeated Brazil 1-0 with a goal in the 90th minute Lionel Messi. In the domestic Copa America 2011 his team failed after moderate performances in the group stage in the quarter- finals to eventual champions Uruguay. Then Batista was released on July 25, 2011 as a coach or even asked for his removal.

On 30 May 2012, Batista signed a six month contract with Shanghai Shenhua Liansheng FC. On July 4, 2013, occurred after 15 match days in 13th lying back.
